Year 5 & 6 2017 - 2018

Mrs Bebbington

Happy half term!

This half term, as usual, is going to be a busy one; there's so much going on over the next few weeks! - not wanting the mention the unavoidable key stage 2 tests starting on May 14th. The year 6 children will have plenty of opportunity to practise in schooI for these tests, so please don't worry. Please pop in and see me if you want a chat about the tests but I will be explaining more during parents evening.

I am very excited about this term's English work as it is based on another favourite author of mine - Katherine Rundell. I am looking forward to sharing 'The Explorer' with the class. It is a story based on an aeroplane crash in South America (not a true story). It is about the trials and tribulations of four children who meet after the plane crashes in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. We will travel through Brazil with them and learn about the largest country in South America. This will also lead to geographical work on biomes and rivers. We will be working on the theme of changing materials in science, how Jesus helped others in RE, and getting the paints out for some art work based on the artist, Henri Rosseau. We are starting our maths this term with topics on: geometry, to include 2 and 3 D shape, translations, symmetry and coordinates. Please continue to practice your x tables because you will be using them regularly.

Our PE days continue to be Thursday with the sports coaches and with the class on the occassional Tuesday afternoon. We will be working on indoor and outdoor athletics this term. Swimming starts this term, to replace most Tuesday PE sessions. A letter will be sent home with all the relevant information. However please make sure there is a suitable PE kit in school at all times as we will be going outside if the opportunity arises.Trainers are a must this term!

As usual spellings and tables will come home on Thursdays. The children will be tested in school on Mondays. The children will also bring maths homework home on Thursdays, to be handed in on a Monday. Year 6 will continue have a Maths SAT practice book coming home for their homework. Please encourage your child to read at home too as part of their home learning as well as for sheer enjoyment and also to keep practising their x tables and being confident in telling the time.

Please do come into see me if you wish to discuss anything that arrises through the course of this halt term. The children have all come back into school keen and ready to learn. I am really looking forward to taking them on their journey as they progress through the upper part of key stage 2, getting them all ready for that inevitable move to high school, which for some is now very close indeed!
