Year 5 & 6 2017 - 2018

Mrs Bebbington

Welcome back everyone!!

This term is going to be a busy one; there's so much going on over the next few weeks! We have a visit to the high school planned, our woodland area will be officially opened, a residential trip to Standon Bowers, followed by a class assembly, and of course there's all the work we will be doing! Our English and History work this term will be based on a favourite story of mine as a child, read to me by my teacher in year 6 (a very long time ago!). I have been so looking forward to sharing 'The Silver Sword' by Ian Serraillier with you. It is a war time story based in Poland on a theme of journeys and hope. We will travel through Europe at the time after the second world war, learn about the hardships people experienced and what life was life living in the forties and fifties. We will be working on the theme of forces in science, the life of Muhammad in RE, making models in DT and brushing up on our spoken French (and that includes me!) We are starting our maths this term with some big numbers, learning to read and write them, following on with work on the four number operations including long division and multiplication.

Our PE days continues to be Thursday with the sports coaches and with the class on Wednesday afternoons. We will be working on football and netball this term. Please make sure there is a suitable kit in school at all times. We will be going outside so a pair of tracksuit bottoms or jogging pants may be needed when the weather gets cooler. Trainers are a must this term!

As usual spellings and tables will come home on Thursdays. The children will be tested in school on Mondays. The children will also bring maths homework home on Thursdays, to be handed in on a Monday. Please encourage your child to read at home too as part of their home learning and just for sheer enjoyment and also to keep practising their x tables and being confident in telling the time.

Please do come into see me if you wish to discuss anything that arrises through the course of this term. The children have all come back into school keen and ready to learn. I am really looking forward to taking them on their journey as they progress through the upper part of key stage 2, getting them all ready for that inevitable move to high school.
